A Small Triumph in the Rain.

Coming off a promising debut at Watkins Glen International, GEN2 Racing was hopeful for a positive result at the 3 hour Grand-Am race, August 31, 2002 from Virginia International Raceway in Danville, Virginia. Repairs had been made to the #93 Precision Motor Werks/GardenIron.com/Hillcrest Chevrolet Camaro after the incidents at the Glen, and the team had just tested for two days at New Hampshire Intl. Speedway.

Practice and qualifying were exciting, as Kent Jones and Trevor Hilliar hadn’t been to the track, and third driver, Chris Thompson had only raced the south course. All three drivers were able to turn comparable times with Kent Jones qualifying the car 9th in GSII.

The day of the race was wet, as predicted, with the Grand-Am Cup Street Touring race seeing seven full course cautions. The team prepared for a wet race by softening up the car and mounting new Hoosier rain tires. Kent started the race and was able to adapt quickly to the conditions, turning competitive lap times. Trevor got in at the first fuel stop and continued on without incident until the wipers failed 30 minutes into his stint. The team had a chance to address the wipers at the 2 hour mark, while the car was fueled and Chris Thompson took over driving duties.

The car was pulled in as the day turned to night to repair the same electrical gremlin that had caused the wipers to fail. This time it was the brake lights and the Grand-Am officials black flagged the car. A quick fix got the car back out but a few precious positions were lost. Chris brought the car home without incident and giving the team it’s first solid finish of a 10th place.

The team will now prepare for a 3 hour event at Mt. Tremblant Circuit. The former home of the Canadian Grand Prix is north of Montreal in the ski resort of area of St.Jovite.
